'Beauty and the Geek' TV show to scout Madison

The television program "Beauty and the Geek" is coming to Madison to find contestants for the fifth season of the reality show.

Representatives of the production will be at the University Book Store on 711 State Street next Saturday, Dec. 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to audition both "geeks" and "beauties," as the show calls them, in an open casting call.

Since audition signs have been posted, "students have been inquiring quite often, actually," said Kevin Phelps, vice president of UBS. "It seems like it's kind of a hot topic down on campus."

The show, which airs Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on the CW Network (WBUW/Ch. 57 in Madison), pairs up awkward, brainy men with little or no dating experience and women who are physically attractive but lacking scholarly success to compete for a $250,000 jackpot.

Beating the odds on 'Survivor'

In early September, TIME magazine’s TV critic, James Poniewozik, published a list of the best 100 TV shows of all time. Among his choices was CBS’ “Survivor,” the show that debuted to huge ratings in 2000 and helped fuel the American craze for reality TV programming.

There are endless reality shows on TV today: the frequent CBS Emmy-winner “The Amazing Race,” in which players race on foot, by oxcart, pony, car, train and plane across the globe; the hugely popular singing competition “American Idol” on FOX; The CW’s “Beauty and the Geek.” The list goes on.

But there’s something about “Survivor” that sets it apart, said Poniewozik.

Best Bets

8 P.M. TO 9 P.M.

Everyone has a few guilty pleasures. Mine right now is Beauty And The Geek. So downright cheesy it's fun to watch. In this new episode the remaining beauties and their geeks go off on a Mexican jaunt. One geek really crawls out of his shell. Another scurries in and closes the door shut. The beauties must compete in a memory thing while the geeks twist and shout in a dance-off. Then comes the plot surprise sure to change this contest forever (CW, Citytv at 8).

9 P.M. TO 10 P.M.

I'll eat my press pass if The Battle Of Medak Pocket isn't at least nominated for a Gemini as Best Documentary. Producer William Cobban has meticulously reconstructed a key battle between Canadian peacekeepers and insurgents in 1993's wartorn Yugoslavia. Cobban went to the Canadian soldiers for their reminiscences and actually redid the battle at Meaford, Ont., using vintage armed carriers and rifles.

The Scoop: Open call for beauties and geeks Nov. 10

Are you a beautiful woman and think you can help a geek? Are you a geek and want to help a beauty?

From 11a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 10 casting directors for CW's "Beauty and the Geek" will be in Ithaca at Stella's Restaurant, 403 College Ave, in search for beautiful women and geeks for the fifth season of the hit reality series. They are currently seeking...

Beauty and the Geek

Today from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the DoubleTree Guest Suites on 15th Street, the CW's "Beauty and the Geek" will hold an open casting call. They are looking for, you guessed it, beauties and geeks. So geeks, here are a few reasons why you should audition:

1. You missed the filming of

VH-1's "The Pick-Up Artist" in Austin, so some guy named Kosmo won instead of you.

2. No one watches the CW - yet! If you are selected as one of the geeks on this season of "Beauty and the Geek," at least your friends and family will tune into the network home of "Farmer Wants a Wife" and "Aliens in America."

3. Thanks to the writers' strike, reality television will rule the airwaves in the spring. With no "Grey's Anatomy" or "The Office" competing with shows like "Beauty and the Geek," tabloids would be forced to crown you the next McDreamy or Jim Halpert (probably Jim Halpert).
