DARIUS THE GREAT: In The Shadows of Cinematography with Darius Khondji

He is one of the great names in his profession and yet virtually unknown to the audience at large for he works in the shadows of the film directors and the actors on a movie set. His job is Cinematography, which basically consists of defining what the movie will ultimately look like onscreen: The lights, the type of film and lens to be used up to overseeing the photography are all part of his job. Darius Khondji has remarkably imposed his unique style in both French and Hollywood Films for the past two decades becoming one of the most envied and demanded talents in an already highly competitive industry. Just to name a few of his achievements: Marc Caro and Jean Pierre Jeunet's Delicatessen and City of Lost Children , David Fincher's Se7en, Alan Parker's Evita should be enough to introduce him but would certainly not be complete without Roman Polanski's Ninth Gate, Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty, Danny Boyle's The Beach, Sydney Pollack's The Interpreter and once again back to his collaboration with Jean Pierre Jeunet with Alien: Resurrection (deemed by many critics as the Only good follow-up to Ridley Scott's original classic).

"August Rush" - There are precious movies and then there are movies about 11-year-old orphans following "the music." In this respect, "August Rush" is on another level. We need to break out a whole new definition of cheesiness for a film like this, augmented by fake tears and vomit gestures. It begins with a a boy (Freddie Highmore) standing in an open field where the surrounding sounds - the wind, the trees, the grass - swirl like a symphony in his head. In a whispering voice-over, he says: "I believe in music the way that some people believe in fairy tales." It thus proceeds in fairy-tale fashion, though it's more unrealistic than surrealistic. Without any tangible evidence, our protagonist senses his parents (Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Keri Russell) are still alive and that he just needs to make music loud enough so they can hear him (sort of like the ethos behind a Coldplay album).

Ethnic hairstyles in corporate life

"I have an older sister who is a corporate lawyer and my father used to tell me that she would only interview with straightened hair. Once she got the job then she would then switch to braids. Many people believe that ethnic hair is unacceptable. But my hair has never been a problem as far as my career goes. It's neat and very professional." (Newsday / Bruce Gilbert)

'Beauty and the Geek' TV show to scout Madison

The television program "Beauty and the Geek" is coming to Madison to find contestants for the fifth season of the reality show.

Representatives of the production will be at the University Book Store on 711 State Street next Saturday, Dec. 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to audition both "geeks" and "beauties," as the show calls them, in an open casting call.

Since audition signs have been posted, "students have been inquiring quite often, actually," said Kevin Phelps, vice president of UBS. "It seems like it's kind of a hot topic down on campus."

The show, which airs Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on the CW Network (WBUW/Ch. 57 in Madison), pairs up awkward, brainy men with little or no dating experience and women who are physically attractive but lacking scholarly success to compete for a $250,000 jackpot.
